WHY MANY CUSTOMERS CHOOSE 5.3L L84 & 6.2L L87 DFM DELETE

Posted on December 11, 2025 by promarengine

The GM L84 (5.3L) and L87 (6.2L) engines are part of GM’s modern L+ series found in late model Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, and similar platforms. These engines use Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) GM’s updated evolution of Active Fuel Management (AFM).

AFM was GM’s original cylinder deactivation system. DFM is the newer and more complex version that controls each lifter individually, but both operate on the same basic principle.

While designed for improved fuel efficiency, the systems have become known for long term reliability issues. Because of this, many customers choose a DFM delete when installing a remanufactured engine or seeking improved dependability. At Promar Engine, we support these requests and provide guidance to ensure proper installation.

Why Delete DFM on the L84 or L87?

1. Known Reliability Complaints

DFM uses special collapsible lifters that deactivate cylinders on demand. Unfortunately, these systems have become notorious for:

  • Collapsed or stuck lifters
  • Misfires on cylinders the ECM attempts to deactivate
  • Premature camshaft wear
  • Lifter unlock/lock failures
  • Oil consumption issues

Many engine replacements are needed because of these failures, so customers often choose to delete DFM to avoid repeating the same issues.

What Does a DFM Delete Require?

Deleting DFM is both a hardware modification and a software recalibration. Below is the correct procedure.

1. ECM/TCM Reprogramming (Mandatory)

The ECM continuously monitors and commands DFM operation. When deleting the system, the tuning must:

  • Disable all DFM logic
  • Prevent diagnostic trouble codes
  • Maintain proper fueling, idle quality, and drivability
  • Ensure VVT and torque management continue operating properly

Without tuning, the engine will run poorly and may enter limp mode.

2. Plugging the DFM Solenoid Oil Passages in the Engine Block

Unlike older AFM engines that used a VLOM plate, modern DFM engines have a DFM valley cover and the solenoids are mounted directly into the block.

During our remanufacturing process, Promar Engine plugs all DFM solenoid oil passages in the block as part of the DFM delete preparation. This ensures the customer does not need to perform this step.

  • Prevents unintended oil flow to inactive DFM circuits
  • Ensures stable oil pressure
  • Provides full-time lubrication to all lifters

This modification is completed on every Promar remanufactured L84/L87 engine ordered with a DFM delete.

3. Plugging the DFM Valley Cover Port

Because the valley cover includes an opening related to the DFM system:

  • The customer must plug the DFM valley cover port
  • This seals the system after the internal block ports are plugged
  • It completes the conversion to a traditional full time V8 oiling system

The Final Result: A More Reliable Full Time V8

Once the block passages are plugged, the valley cover is sealed, and the ECM calibration is updated, the engine behaves as a traditional V8:

  • No cylinder shutdown
  • No DFM lifter collapse
  • Consistent oil pressure
  • Reduced lifter and camshaft failure risk
  • No vibration or drivability issues from V4 mode

For many customers, the improved long term reliability makes the DFM delete a worthwhile investment.
